To allow Jefferson College to continue to attract students, promote a lively academic environment, and provide a higher level of sustainability, Luckett & Farley developed a master plan for their main campus in downtown Louisville to improve safety and define a greater sense of place.
Over time the urban campus has become dominated by asphalt surface parking lots eroding the heart of campus. A key focus for the master plan was building back the central campus. To achieve this the plan proposes a pedestrian and transportation friendly corridor, with enhanced outdoor spaces in central campus.
The enhanced pedestrian crossings and increased access to public transportation will discourage mid-block crossings, improving pedestrian and driver safety. A green central courtyard will run beside the pedestrian main street connecting existing campus buildings and creating a cohesive identity to central campus.
The existing central campus parking will be displaced. To accommodate this, ground floor and upper-level facility expansions will work in combination with rooftop and below-grade parking.
The master plan also strategically considers adjacent brownfield properties, vacant properties, and buildings for future expansion. The plan identified a site for the expansion of Jefferson College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Information Technology Center, including a quad design. The layout will provide safe pedestrian linkage to the established campus three blocks away.
