As a growing suburb of Louisville, Bardstown sought to enhance resources for its citizens and strengthen its charming historic downtown. The vision centers on developing a premier downtown recreational complex and park adjacent to city government facilities and local amenities.
Luckett & Farley led the master plan, initiating an inclusive stakeholder process to create a program that meets community needs and aspirations. This Parks Master Plan integrates urban development, community engagement, and economic vitality, laying the foundation for a vibrant and sustainable future for Bardstown.
The redesigned park layout includes a walking track, open event and picnic areas, and a thoughtfully integrated splash park with essential infrastructure. A key component of the master plan is an 80,000-square-foot recreation center, envisioned as a focal point for diverse activities year-round. The center includes a multi-use indoor gym, state-of-the-art aquatic center, community spaces, and support facilities. Its innovative pod system can accommodate a range of hard-court sports, while an activity pool area offers splash pads, water slides, and a wading pool, making it a major attraction for residents and visitors.
Beyond recreation, the master plan injects new energy into Bardstown, enriching residents’ quality of life and fostering an environment supportive of local businesses. The recreation center is expected to generate revenue by hosting regional sports tournaments and city events, enhancing Bardstown’s profile as a dynamic and engaging destination. The surrounding park area will include revitalized spaces, transforming the former pool site into an open space ideal for concerts, festivals, and passive recreation. Additional features include an outdoor splash play zone, playground, shelters, a skate park, tennis and volleyball courts, and walking tracks, ensuring accessible recreation for all.
Luckett & Farley provided services in Landscape Architecture, Planning, and Architecture. The Landscape Architecture and Planning team conducted site inventory, concept development, and final renderings, creating design narratives and character imagery to align with community goals. The Architecture team developed concept plans, programming, floor diagrams, and high-level cost estimates, while also consulting on the aquatic center to ensure functionality within budget. Together, these disciplines delivered an integrated, sustainable plan balancing aesthetics and functionality for Bardstown’s new park facilities.
